Every framed map is printed, matted and framed here, then sent to you ready to hang. One frame, one mat, one glazing. The only decision you make is how big.
What arrives
You take it out of the box and hang it
The print is made first, on 310gsm cotton rag with archival pigment inks. It sits behind an off-white mat with a 55mm border, which holds the paper clear of the glazing and gives the map room to be looked at.
The frame is a Victorian Ash box, 20mm across the face and 35mm deep. Gallery acrylic goes in front of it. The back is sealed and the hanging hardware is fitted before it is packed, so there is nothing to assemble at your end.
Choosing a size
There is one frame. The only decision is how big.
A hallway, a study wall, or beside a desk where it will be read close up.
The size most street plans and subdivision posters want. Our most ordered.
For parish maps and anything with detail you will stand in front of.
Sizes above are the printed sheet. The 55mm mat and the frame add to that on every edge, so allow more wall than the print size suggests.

The corner
Waxed and buffed by hand
The timber takes a natural clear coat first. After that it is finished with a hard drying blend of beeswax and carnauba, applied and buffed by hand. That is what gives the satin sheen. It brings out the lustre in the timber and protects it at the same time.
The moulding is narrow on purpose. At 20mm across the face it holds the map without competing with it, and the 35mm depth is just enough to carry the mat and the acrylic while keeping the frame close to the wall.

What it is made from
Victorian Ash
Also sold as Tasmanian Oak. Light and close grained, running from neutral through to a faint pink. It sits with a room rather than announcing itself.
310gsm cotton rag
One hundred per cent cotton, fourdrinier made, with a light natural tooth. It holds fine linework and gives the old sheets somewhere to sit.
Mat and acrylic
Peterboro conservation board, alpha cellulose and buffered with calcium carbonate so it stays neutral against the print instead of yellowing into it. Off-white, 55mm on every edge, with gallery acrylic in front.

Before you order
Questions people ask
Does the mat cover part of the map?
Slightly. The sheet runs a few millimetres under the mat on each edge and is hinged in place behind it, which is what holds it flat and square. It takes the outer edge, not the body of the map.
Why acrylic rather than glass?
Acrylic is lighter on the wall and it travels. Glass posted across the country is a risk we would rather not take with a piece made to order.
Can I hang it in a sunny room?
Pigment inks and cotton rag hold up well, but no print enjoys hours of direct sun.
Do you do custom sizes?
Yes. Every frame is built to order, so if a map wants a size of its own, ask before you order and we will quote it.
Can I have a darker frame?
Yes. Natural waxed Victorian Ash is the standard, and the same moulding is stained in warm black, japan black and teak.
Can I order the print now and frame it later?
Yes. Every map is sold unframed as well, and the sizes are the same, so nothing changes if you frame it yourself down the track.
